What is your favorite party food?

Next Sunday is "Whiskers in Winter" and I've already received quite a few RSVPs. And I need your help!

Both the house and the cat facility are open. Things get rockin' at 1:00 pm. During the daylight hours, people tend to hang out in the two floors of the cat facility. After dark, people tend to park their butts in front of the fire in house (although both options are available throughout the day and night).

So I have food both in the cat facility and in the house. I need some ideas. After years of giving this party, I'm looking for new and different foods!

Qualifications: I have ways of keeping food cold or warm, however the food must stay tasty for a few hours. So food or snacks that are only good for 20 minutes once it comes out of the oven or off the stove need not apply.

It also needs to be REALLY GOOD!

So send your ideas or recipes! You can put them in comments or email them to: info at americancat dot net.

I could a couple of totally decadent cookie recipes, too. Or, if you are coming early, you could BRING totally decadent cookies. :)

I LOVE mini meatball sandwiches! My aunt makes tiny little meatballs every year and has a heated pan that people can just scoop them out of. She just keeps a bag of rolls that are split at the top next to the meatballs or little plates so you can either eat just the meatball, or make a tiny meatball sandwich. They stay good all night too.

We've been making appetizers that we call 'cicadas.' Cut the biggest dates you can find in half lengthwise. Soften blue cheese (or mix blue cheese crumbles with some whipped cream cheese for spreadability or if you don't want a major blast of blue cheese). Spread a dab of cheese on each date half and top with a toasted pecan half. A little tedious to stuff all the dates, but they can sit out for hours and be fine. Nice with a glass of wine and easy to eat!

OK, Martha, that definitely fits the "decadent" model. I'm going to look for dates tonight. :)

OK, the date things are amazing. And the blue cheese-cream cheese mix makes a great cracker spread too (as I nibble on it now instead of eating a healthy dinner) And I have local ground beef in the freezer, so I can do little meatballs, too. Anybody else?

Every party needs a killer cookie - these are one of my favorites. The raspberry jam makes them healthy :-)

Sonia Cookies

1/2 c. butter, room temp-ish
1/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1 c. sifted flour
1 egg white, slightly beaten (for dipping)
1/2 c. or so fine-chopped nuts ( I like pecans, but walnuts work in a pinch)
Raspberry preserves

Cream butter and sugar and beat well, then add egg yolk and beat another minute or so. Blend in flour until dough is smooth. Chill for about an hour to firm up dough. Form balls with teaspoon of dough, dip each ball into egg white, and then into nuts. Place balls on greased cookie sheet nut side up and make an indentation in center of each (use thimble or thumb or finger). Bake at 300 for 10 min., remove from oven and press indentations again if needed. Return to oven and bake for 15 min or until lightly brown. After cookies have cooled, spoon raspberry jam into indentations.

It's too bad NY is so far from Dallas, otherwise I would just bring them :-)
