Radial hypoplasia revisited...

Well, you can see why they call them kangaroo cats. What am I going to do with this little guy? He seems to get around OK so far. And those front legs are strong as anything. He can climb and hang off things with them. Posted by Picasa

I just finished reading the book "Uncle Whiskers", about a cat with only two good legs (his rear legs). It's a terrible book (the guy who wrote it just can't tell a story to save his life), but the cat really did get along quite well on just two good legs. He was missing one front leg completely, and the other leg had nerve damage, was folded in, and only had movement at the shoulder. Uncle Whiskers suffered his disability when he was two years old and had to learn to compensate, so perhaps your little guy will do fine as he won't know any differently.

I'm thinking about him too.

Hmmmm...leigh-ann, you've given me an idea. I think maybe I'll get out the good camera (the 35mm that takes FILM) and start photographing this little guy for a story.

I will happily mail you my copy of "Uncle Whiskers" if you think you could bear to read it. It was written by a 70+ year old man with some old notions in his head, as he constantly apologizes throughout the book for how much he loves his cat. He calls himself "stupid", "absurb", etc., and he does it so incessantly I wanted to send him to therapy. Just love your cat, sheesh.

My vet apparently has a cat named Joey with radial hypoplasia. He's apparently a very healthy cat, about 5 or so, and gets along fine in a multi-cat/dog household.

Yeah, what georg says. The cat doesn't know that he's got a disability--he's just who he is.
