My inspiration to write this book was a bitter sibling fight when Nikita died. She was the most gentle and loveliest big dog one could have. My brother and his wife were able to leave New York City. The cost of living was getting difficult, and they very much wanted to have a child.

They finally moved out into the countryside, got a nice small home, and outdoor space that Nikita could roam and wander about. So, their son was born soon after. It was almost a perfect happy ending. Nikita tried her best to hold on to life, but she was already a very old dog. Old-age diabetes robbed her strength and then, eventually, her mind.

I tried to explain to my brother how her passing was part of the unbreakable circle of life. The conversations soon became difficult and strained, that I was not able to understand his feelings at all since he spent the best of twelve years raising her to be a good family companion and that I was ignorant to his pain and loss. Soon, there were no more conversations. We stopped talking to each other for awhile.

I promised I would write the saddest story I could ever think of. In Chinese acupuncuture, you can cure pain with another pain. To cure a serious ailment of the heart, I was not simply going to mend the heart; I had to find a story that would break it.

I also had crazy feral cats at the office building that I managed. They disappeared when a red-tailed hawk came along that fateful day...

(don't worry, i promise not to bite)
