To "stop, drop, and roll"...

...add "scoop and snuggle" to your litany of catch-phrases to make your life happier and safer.

I try to practice "scoop and snuggle" in my cat facility. For some of the stronger, shyer ones, it's more like "pet and snog" because picking them up isn't an everyday option. But I am making "scoop and snuggle" a New Year's Resolution because sometimes I realize I am spending more time cleaning around cats than actually hugging them.

I've made a point of picking up Ms. Spider on a regular basis, and she has gone from "Don't you ever dare do that again" and giving me permanent scars to "Okay, I'll purr for a little for you." Mainly because she knows she's getting my undivided attention at the time I pick her up and snuggle. Plus I flip her onto her back for it, so she has access with all of her claws, so she feels safer.

Now to work on Tom... picking up doesn't equal good things at all for him, and with his bad hip, it might actually be painful.

Heh. My husband and I call that "the dignity extraction protocol". The only trouble is that now we're worried that when we have kids, convincing them that cats are NOT stuffed animals is going to be difficult....

Hi. I just found your blog, and what a delight! I have a house FULL of stray/rescue kitties. As I look around my office at this moment, I see five of my 20 cats within arms reach, along with four dogs, and my sleeping house chicken. It's late and I have to teach in the morning. Reading your blog was such a pleasant activity before I go to bed. Thanks.
